This 153 patient, double blind, randomized study, found that DMSO and allopurinol, (both free radical scavengers) substantially improved patient conditions as compared to the group that received only pharmaceutical steroids. DMSO was given to a random half of 315 patients with ulceration of the duodenum (at the beginning of the small intestine). At eight weeks the healing rate with a standard pharmaceutical drug was 60% however the healing rate with both the drug and DMSO was 100%. Whilst more than one cause probably exists, the damage mechanism in colitis appears to be from free (hydroxyl) radicals. Unlike other anti-oxidants DMSO easily and quickly penetrates cell membranes to get at the free radicals inside the cells.
