Gradual input of 50cc of DMSO (50% with water) into the urinary bladder, via catheter or syringe, has achieved significant relief of symptoms, in 213 patients, with inflammatory conditions like cystitis and chronic inflammed prostate. Shirley SW. Dimethyl sulfoxide in treatment of inflammatory genitourinary disorders. Urology. 1978 Mar;11(3):215-20. PMID:636125.
DMSO was instilled into 13 patients with classic cystitis in their bladder tissue and 15 with non-ulcer disease. After six instillations, a residual treatment effect lasting 16-72 months could be seen. We conclude that therapy with DMSO appears to be a feasible treatment for all types of bladder tissue cystitis. Rossberger J. Critical appraisal of dimethyl sulfoxide treatment for interstitial cystitis, discomfort, side-effects and treatment outcome. Scand J Urol Nephrol. 2005;39(1):73-7. PMID:15764276.
Dr Stanley Jacob states that he gets a 90 percent improvement rate with patients with chronic cystitis, by injecting DMSO into patients veins before installing it into their bladder. "Almost everyone knows Interstitial Cystitis is a body wide disorder" Dr Jacob said. By injecting the DMSO directly into the bloodstream, DMSO can reach all the patient's organs. He starts out with 25% concentrations and builds up to 50%. He also uses DMSO topically for pain in the perineal area. Patients are taught how to install DMSO themselves by inserting a catheter with lidocaine or K-Y Jelly. Patients are instructed to hold the DMSO/water mix in their bladder for as long as is comfortable, usually no more than 15 to 20 minutes. In difficult cases Dr Jacob suggests trying DMSO for one year before giving up on it. Long term use has been documented as safe and Dr Jacob adds further evidence by stating that he has been swallowing a teaspoon of DMSO every day for the past 32 years, and hasn't had a cold or flu during that time.
