In this study, we evaluated the effects by DMSO and a DMSO-containing saline on thermal and chemical pain receptors, inflammation and movement in mice. Oral administration of DMSO produced anti-inflammatory effects whereas local administration prior to adding the inflammatory agent (zymosan) potentiated the inflammatory action. These results suggest that DMSO displayed opposite effects on inflammation, depending on the route of administration (or the site). Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties but the anti-inflammatory mechanism of DMSO is not yet clear. This study assessed effects of DMSO on human blood vessels (aorta) as the development of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) plays a crucial role in inflammation and tumour growth.
