DMSO
was given to female mice from age 10 weeks to see if lupus kidney injury could be reduced. Twenty mice were randomly assigned to saline or DMSO treatment groups and studies were done. These revealed nearly normal kidneys in 5/6 DMSO-treated mice whereas 4/8 controls had severe kidney inflammation. DMSO therefore appears capable of improving lupus kidney injury in mice. Auto-antibodies reactive with double-stranded DNA are a hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but it is not fully understood how this contributes to various disease changes in lupus patients. We have have found that anti-DNA antibodies from the clear body fluids of lupus patients enhanced radical cleavage of DNA by hydroxyl radicals and this cleavage was inhibited by DMSO. Watanabe N, Enhancement of hydroxyl radical DNA cleavage by serum anti-dsDNA antibodies in SLE. Lupus, 1998;7(2):108-12. PMID:9541095.
Systemic lupus erythematosus patients sometimes present with pathologically confirmed lupus interstitial cystitis. Treatment with steroids has not been observed to be successful. Two patients are presented who were successfully treated by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) being instilled into their bladders. Both patients remain symptom free years later.
