Golden hamster embryo cells were exposed to gamma rays in the presence or absence of dimethyl sulfoxide. DMSO gave significant protection against cell killing. The extent of radioprotection with dimethyl sulfoxide was 85-89% of the lethal effects observed in the absence of dimethyl sulfoxide. Dimethyl sulfoxide also exerted protected against gamma-ray-induced DNA single-strand breaks and chromosomal aberrations. Watanabe M. The effects of the radioprotector DMSO were investigated for X rays compared with gamma rays. The protection factor for DMSO was found to be 2.8 for X-ray energies, which is not significantly different from the protection factor of 2.6 found for gamma rays. Raju MR. We investigated the effects of DMSO on radiation damage in the mouse. DMSO administered 30 min before exposure protected the mice from the gamma-whole body irradiation: the 30 days lethality was significantly decreased from 44% to 16%. In the electron microscopic study, the energy centers (mitochondria) in the irradiated mouse liver were swollen, but we could observe no change after DMSO pretreatment. Ueda T.
