The aim of this experimental study was to investigate whether dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) has protective effects on spinal cord injury. New Zealand rabbits were enrolled in the study. In addition to the control group, the study group received 0.1 mL/kg DMSO prior to spinal cord damage due to lack of blood supply. This study demonstrates a considerable neuroprotective effect of DMSO on neurological, biochemical, and microscopic tissue changes analysed during periods of spinal cord injury in rabbits. DMSO deserves further investigation related with spinal cord damage and repair with regards to blood supply problems. Turan NN. How DMSO, a widely used solvent, affects spinal cord injury. The inability to repair the damaged membrane may be one of the key mechanisms underlying the severe neuronal degeneration and overall functional loss seen in in-vivo spinal cord injury and traumatic axonal injury in blunt head trauma. Promoting membrane resealing following damage may therefore constitute a potential effective therapeutic intervention in treating head trauma and spinal cord injuries. Our current studies indicate that DMSO is capable of rendering significant improvement in guinea pig axonal membrane resealing. NOTE:"The repair rate decreased with an increase in temperature and calcium" so it is indicated that these should be reduced whilst the repair is being carried out. This study suggests the role of DMSO in axonal membrane resealing in clinically relevant conditions and raises the possibility of using DMSO in combination with other more established therapies in spinal cord injury treatment. Directions for Use:
Immediately after injury take 15ml (tbsp) (10500mg) of 70% DMSO and 30% water in a glass of fresh fruit juice (fructose) 3 or 4 times a day. However if possible get a GP to administer to you intravenously. Alternatively - apply 4 to 6 sprays of 70% DMSO and 30% Aloe Vera morning and night to your spine and rub in well. After application rub in a good quality moisturiser like "Natural Instinct" Natural Body Lotion to maintain skin condition.
