DMSO, in purified form, has been used by us for the treatment of different types of wounds in horses. All investigations have been carried out in the veterinary clinic of our school. In every case, undiluted DMSO has been applied by means of a brush for about three minutes at six-hourly intervals.

The first observation made was the rapid ability of the DMSO to stimulate healthy granulation. This reaction was really fantastic and was observed mainly during the first few days of treatment.

We noted that after 12 to 14 days, the healing process slowed down, and the wound surface hardened somewhat. If at this stage, the application of DMSO was discontinued, healing progressed quite rapidly by employing only simple hygenic measures. DMSO's bacteriostatic characteristic was evident after only two or three days application, when wounds that were badly infected at the commencement of treatment, showed no pus formation. Underneath, the rather loose scab formation that formed between each application was found serous exudation instead of frank pus. A type of film seemed to form over the surface of the wound, protecting it from secondary invaders, yet allowing the granulation tissue formation to proceed, but not to the extent that proud flesh is developed. Some animals have reacted as if DMSO was irritating, but such response seemed to be more in the nature of an itchiness as healing progressed. It was only after 6 to 8 days of treatment that such animals were observed biting at the wound. Suitable restraint had to be applied to prevent self-mutilation. Levesque, F.
